Who We Are
Cratered is a community for novelists and short story writers of speculative fiction, which includes science fiction, fantasy, horror, dystopian, alternate history, apocalyptic, cyberpunk and many other genres. We like the Wikipedia entry which describes speculative fiction as “any fiction story that includes elements, settings and characters whose features are created out of imagination and speculation rather than based on attested reality and everyday life”. Cratered consists of a workshop and general forum, which are private, and feature articles that are available to the public.
The Cratered Workshop
The Cratered workshop is peer-to-peer, resembling a university-level writing class, albeit self-guided and without an instructor. In our experience, a typical writer’s group is open-ended and unstructured. In contrast, a Cratered workshop has a limited duration, participation requirements, and can be taken as often as desired. The workshop focuses on writing, critiquing and revising original manuscripts, with the ultimate goal of helping writers bring novels or short stories across the finish line.
A Cratered workshop is intended for writers with educational backgrounds in creative writing, literature, art, or related subjects, or equivalent experience and study. Writers of all skill levels are welcome, although as of this writing most members are new writers. Requisites for membership include mastery of the basics (like grammar and spelling) and literacy in various genres of fiction and speculative fiction. We want dedicated writers who read a lot.
The Mighty Dollar?
Cratered is private, donation supported, affordable, and while we are technically a for-profit organization, your success as a writer is our primary motive. That and earning enough to be self-sustaining and award cash prizes for writing contests. Members donate what they can afford. Every penny helps. Cratered depends on word-of-mouth, not paid advertising, because we’d rather give prizes to starving writers than toss coins on Google’s mountain of cash.
The Cratered Community
Cratered aspires to be a strong community based on mutual support, not competition, consisting of writers and thinkers dedicated to helping each other through discussion and collaboration. We believe that groundbreaking success often occurs in gatherings where creative minds collectively inspire and push each other to greater things than they could achieve alone. History has many examples. Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gertrude Stein used to meet at a Paris bookstore named Shakespeare and Company. A pub in Oxford called The Eagle and the Child was home to The Inklings, a literary group with members including J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis. In 1960s New York City, famed artist Andy Warhol started The Factory as a studio and gathering place for artists and writers, including Allen Ginsburg, Truman Capote, and Bob Dylan. The list goes on. If you are a dedicated writer and literary enthusiast who shares these values and aspirations, Cratered wants you, so request an invitation now.
